Russian Soldier Given Life Sentence by Ukrainian Court

A Ukrainian court sentenced a Russian tank commander to life in prison on May 23, in the first war crimes trial since the country’s invasion by Russia.

Russia soldier Vadim Shishimarin was convicted of killing 62-year-old Oleksandr Shelipov in the village of Chupakhivka in Ukraine’s Sumy Oblast on February 28.

Shishimarin had pleaded guilty to the crime but had said he was acting on orders. He asked forgiveness from Shelipov’s widow.

“The court ruled that Shyshimarin Vadym Yevheniiovych, born on October 17, 2000, was found guilty of committing a criminal offense under Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and sentenced to life imprisonment,” the judge said, according to Suspilne News.
