Shooting sparks campus lockdown at US university

A US university campus went into lockdown amid reports of gunfire on Thursday. Local media reports say one person was taken to hospital after being shot and wounded on the campus of Savannah State University in Georgia. “We were eating and they just started fighting out of nowhere and then someone pulled out a gun and shot him,” said student Ashia Gordon. “Everyone just left. He was by himself.” No active shooter was found on campus and inquiries are continuing. The campus of the historically black university is in the heart of Savannah, an Atlantic seaport that is Georgia’s oldest city. US universities have been the scene of many firearms incidents amid an ongoing national debate on gun control. The Savannah incident came a day after two TV journalists were slain by a gunman during a live broadcast in Virginia and about two months after the June 17 fatal shooting of nine parishioners at an African-American church in Charleston, South Carolina.
