Smog Gathers Around Sydney Opera House in Timelapse Footage (File)

Sydney, Australia, was slightly obscured by haze on October 30, timelapse video of the city’s iconic harbor shows, in what was a foretaste of much worse to come in November, as smoke from wildfires descended on the city.

Sydney was under a poor air quality alert that day, according to the Bureau of Meteorology, New South Wales, and authorities were already advising residents to consult their region’s “bush fire survival plan.”

Bushfires have continued across the state of New South Wales in areas such as Port Macquarie within the last two weeks. Hot and dry conditions combined with winds have caused an increase in fire activity across the east coast of the state since Friday, November 8.
