Storm Pummels Northern Germany With Heavy Rain

A violent storm, dubbed “Niklas”, approached Berlin on Tuesday, March 31, with heavy rain and winds. The storm, reportedly the most powerful to hit the country in recent years, brought gales of up to 192 kmh (140 mph) to Germany. Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported that the storm killed at least nine people in weather-related accidents, caused power outages, uprooted trees and prevented thousands of rail commuters from travelling.

The storm, slashing across Austria and Switzerland, is also expected to hit Belgium, Denmark and the UK.
