Timelapse Video Shows Extragalactic Jet Collision

A newly released video from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope shows the collision of two pieces of matter ejected from a massive black hole in a galaxy 260 million light-years from Earth. The video uses 20 years’ worth of images from Hubble of galaxy NGC 3862 in the constellation Leo. The video shows a fast “knot” of material on an extragalactic jet catch up to and crash into a slower-moving knot, causing both to brighten significantly.

The video was assembled by Eileen Meyer of the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) in Baltimore, Maryland, and her results will be published in the May 28 issue of the journal Nature. See more information here. Credit: YouTube/NASA
