Tornadoes and Floods Reported as Tropical Depression Imelda Swirls Over Houston

Tornadoes and floods were reported in the Houston area on September 18, as Tropical Depression Imelda churned over eastern Texas.

The Sheriff of Harris County, Ed Gonzalez, said that a resident was in his home when a tornado touched down, destroying his house, near the eastern Houston suburb of Highlands on September 18, while witnesses recorded an apparent tornado near Mont Belvieu, farther east.

The Harris County Flood Warning System recorded more than 12 inches of rain as having fallen in some areas north of Houston in the 24 hours before midnight on September 18, but that rainfall largely ceased in the early hours of September 19.
