UEFA wants FIFA vote to be called off amid corruption turmoil

European football’s governing body UEFA has called for Friday’s FIFA presidental election to be postponed. Incumbent Sepp Blatter is standing for reelection to the FIFA presidency. UEFA’s secretary general Gianni Infantino said the FIFA event risks turning into a farce. “UEFA shows this FIFA the red card. Today’s events are a disaster for FIFA and tarnish the image of football as a whole,” said Infantino, reading from a prepared statement. “UEFA is deeply shocked and saddened by them. These events show once again that corruption is deeply rooted in FIFA’s culture. There is a need for the whole of FIFA to be rebooted and for a real reform to be carried out.” Dozens of football officials are in Zurich for the FIFA congress and election, where Blatter is widely expected to win a fifth term if the vote goes ahead. Blatter cancelled an appearance at a meeting on Wednesday of the Confederation of African Football.
