STORY: Speaking after her appearance at a WEF panel discussion with U.S. climate envoy John Kerry, Elizabeth Wathuti told Reuters that attendees were treating the issues as separate rather than interrelated.

"I think one of the main things about the war in Ukraine is the fact that it has continued to exacerbate the impacts of climate change, and especially the rising food insecurity in the Horn of Africa," Wathuti said. In her home country of Kenya, devastation wrought by the once-in-a-generation floods in January followed a period of severe drought.

Ugandan climate activist Vanessa Nakate said it was "devastating" to see how the focus at Davos was largely on profit rather than people. For her, part of the problem is the make-up of the panels at the conference.

"It almost feels like they are listening sessions of white men," Nakate said.

"We can't have climate justice if those who are disproportionately affected are not being platformed or amplified or even listened to".
