Victoria Police offer $500,000 reward to help solve 2013 rape case

Police have re-released footage of a horrifying 2013 rape and assault of a young mother, hoping to identify the attacker who committed the “abhorrent” crime.

Two minutes of footage shows the 22-year-old woman, who had given birth two months prior to June 30, 2013, when she was assaulted. It shows her path home from a night out in North Melbourne, as she was followed by the man, who then grabbed her “in a bearhug” and dragged her five metres down a lane.

It also shows the man’s apparent escape after the crime.

It was reported in 2013 that the woman had been punched, kicked and raped in the attack, which occurred after 3 am.

Police also released images of the woman’s injuries and an image of the man they believe attacked her. They have offered $500,000 as a reward for information.

“The offender is described as being of either Asian or Indian sub-continental appearance, medium build with short, black cropped hair and unshaven with stubble. He was wearing a black top, blue jeans and an open leather jacket,” police described, calling the incident “abhorrent”.

Detective Inspector Steve Wilson said: “We have a victim who was brutally assaulted, both sexually and physically, and is probably very lucky to still be here with us today.” Credit: Victoria Police via Storyful
