Wildfires rage overnight in Spain

STORY: The wildfire started in the province of Zaragoza, northeastern Spain, on Saturday (August 13), threatening homes and forcing the evacuation of at least 1,500 local residents.

The fire was being fanned by strong winds and burned 8,000 hectares (19,800 acres) in less than 24 hours according to preliminary data, Aragon’s regional president Javier Lambán told the media on Sunday (August 14).

The fire in Vall d’Ebo, near Alicante, remained active on Monday after a thunderstorm on Saturday sparked a fire that burned at least 3,500 hectares (8,648 acres), forcing at least 1,000 locals to evacuate their homes.

Police said on Monday they evacuated another 70 homes overnight near the Vall d’Ebo wildfire.

UME was also deployed in the Mediterranean region to back up local firefighters.
