Vintage bills among $50K reported stolen from Quebec safe

Gatineau police are investigating after a Buckingham, Que., resident says $50,000 in cash was stolen from a safe, mostly in the form of rare and collectible $20 bills.

Police said the break-and-enter and theft reportedly took place Sept. 12 during the day between 1:45 and 7:50 p.m. at a private residence.

The stolen cash was in denominations of $10, $20, $50 and $100, but most of the stolen money was made up of former Canadian $20 bills, including rare editions from 1954 and 1969.

Three jewellery boxes were also reported stolen.

Gatineau police are asking businesses and the public for help and the force said people who spot the rare bills should call Sgt. Det. François Chayer at 819-243-2345, ext. 6447.
