Viral prom proposal is cheesy but charming

A new “promposal” is making the internet smile today thanks to a big-hearted high school senior and the adorable girl who said “yes”.

Shaedon Wedel attends Newton High School in Newton, Kansas. His senior prom is coming up on April 22, so Wedel decided to ask someone who holds a very special place in his heart: his best friend’s little sister, Carlie Wittman. Wedel has known the 15-year-old, who has down syndrome, for seven years, so he knew just how to pop the question.

In a video posted to Facebook, we see Wittman waiting on the front steps of her house as Wedel approaches in a special red T-shirt made for the occasion.

“I know I’m NACHO your typical Dorito but…” Reads the front of the shirt.

When he turns around the final message is revealed:

“I’m going to be CHEESY and ask: will you go to prom with me?”

The Doritos theme was Wedel’s idea — they are a favourite snack of Wittman.

The strategy works: Wittman is obviously thrilled, giggling and jumping up and down.

“Oh my gosh!” She says.

“Is that a yes?” Wedel asks, and the two friends share a hug as friends and family look on.

The happy pair have received a lot of media attention since the proposal was shared on social media, but Wedel insists that wasn’t what motivated him.

” I didn’t do it for the publicity and stuff, I did it to make her happy,” Wedel told KWCH 12. “She deserves a lot.”
