Missing Iqaluit hunter found dead

Jimmy Akavak, the chairman of the local search and rescue committee, said anyone is welcome to join the search effort.

A missing Iqaluit hunter, Pauloosie Qaunirq, was found dead this morning, not far from the Iqaluit airport runway.

The 27-year-old had last been seen sometime between 12 pm and 1 pm Friday. He's believed to have gone seal hunting.

Earlier in the search, volunteers had found his qamutik, or traditional sled, but had not yet found Qaunirq or his snowmobile.

Jimmy Akavak, the chairman of the local search and rescue committee, was organizing the search, and had encouraged others to join in while the weather was clear.

Akavak said there had been a good response from volunteers for the search.
