Wailuku River Gushes on Hawaii's Big Island During Hurricane Lane

Residents of Hawaii’s Big Island tried to cope with rising water levels as major downpours from Hurricane Lane crept closer to land, swelling rivers, swamping Hilo’s waterfront and forcing a number of rescues on August 24.

Alex Werjefelt shot this video, showing what he called the “mind-blowing” surge of the Wailuku River in the Hilo area on August 23. Local forecasters said the Wailuku had risen by seven feet.

A flash-flood warning remained in place, with high waters the major concern, the National Weather Service said. Credit: Alex Werjefelt via Storyful
