What We Tested This Week: Soundcore Wakey Bluetooth Speaker Alarm Clock

Who This Is Perfect For: The person who wants to organize their bedside tech needs into one device

The Soundcore Wakey is a multitasking Bluetooth speaker that also happens to look pretty cute on a bedside table. In one small, speaker-sized device, you've got a digital clock, a wireless charging pad, a white-noise machine, and an AM/FM radio.

The Wakey works by just plugging it in and downloading the app. From there, you're able to do it all: display the time, play music or podcasts from your phone, turn on the local radio, and set alarms in 10 pleasant tones.

This device has quickly become a staple of my bedtime routine. Instead of struggling to reach for a charging cord that's fallen behind my bed, I can now simply rest my phone on top of the speaker at night to wirelessly charge. Before falling asleep, I set up my usual cadre of alarms in the app on my phone and select various jingles to ease me awake. I've gotten so used to the iPhone alarm sounds that the new, fun ones on the Soundcore app have me rotating through ringtones like a teenager in 2006 on her Nokia brick phone!

Speaking of the past ... radios, what a revelation! I've had a total return to the proverbial dial while using the Wakey. With my favorite stations preset in the app, I can just press the radio button on the front of the device to "tune in" to my local NPR every morning.

As a space maximizer and clutter minimizer, this little device looks so tidy on my nightstand. It's a bit of a drag that the Wakey has to be plugged in to use, because I hate the aesthetics of dangling cords! It would also be nice to use the speaker in different areas of my apartment.

On the whole, the Wakey has improved my bedside for the better. I'm happy to not have to pick up my phone every time I need to see the time, and I've enjoyed waking up to calming alarm tones that go beyond the iPhone's ubiquitous "Apex" and "Sencha." But ultimately, it's the surprising combo of wireless charging and radio that made me want to give this product a ringing endorsement. Now, will you please take a moment to donate to your local NPR member station?
