Walker West development pumping station experiencing water delays

BROCKTON – Council reviewed a report by John Strader, acting director of operations, on the Walker West booster pumping station.

The pumping station has been hit with a series of delays and other issues, but it has been providing water on a limited basis to the new subdivision, although there were some issues with high-pressure pumps for fire protection purposes.

Strader’s update at the Aug. 23 meeting noted that commissioning and testing of the system has proceeded.

A series of additional fire hydrant flow tests within Walker West Estates and Westwood Drive has been done. The area represents a new pressure zone within the municipal water distribution system, and the tests show the levels are now at or slightly improved from previous levels.

The Walker West Estates area are at or above industry standard levels as per the Fire Underwriters Survey, and at or above levels typically required by the local fire department for detached residential and multi-residential areas.

As was suggested at a previous council meeting, a letter was hand-delivered to all residents within Walker West on Aug. 18, providing the above information.

Bill Murdoch pushed for Clean Water Centre

Mayor Chris Peabody remarked to council at the Aug. 23 meeting that the late Bill Murdoch, who passed away recently, was sometimes controversial, but he was responsible for Walkerton getting the Clean Water Centre in the wake of the E. coli tragedy. Murdoch was the MPP for Walkerton at the time.

“He convinced Ernie Eves, who said that Bill was the reason” the facility was constructed in Walkerton, commented Peabody.

The mayor noted that Murdoch never got to see the state-of-the-art facility that has trained literally thousands in the safe operation of water systems – the facility he was responsible for.

Coun. Tim Elphick said he would encourage the Walkerton Clean Water Centre to name a boardroom after Murdoch.
