As the game went on, Hill maintained a lead but faltered at a key moment with a clue from the “dog is my co-pilot” category.

And for his final “final Jeopardy” round, Trebek read out a clue from the category “Women and Science”: “Dr. Margaret Todd gave science this word for different forms of one basic substance; it’s from the Greek for ‘Equal’ & ‘Place.’

The answer: What is an isotope? Gilligan ended up winning the game although the episode concluded with a video tribute to Trebek, compiled from moments over his long career.

HOST: On Friday, Alex Trebek posthumously hosted his final game of "Jeopardy." The episode was broadcast exactly two months after the beloved game show figure died at the age of 80, following a battle with pancreatic cancer. Trebek hosted "Jeopardy" for a record setting 37 years, and in his final show, well, it was business as usual.

Reigning champ Yoshie Hill took on newbies Jim Gilligan and Cliff Chang. In a funny moment, Trebek seemed puzzled by a unique condition of Gilligan's.

ALEX TREBEK: You suffer from something I've never heard of, tsundoku?

JIM GILLIGAN: Yes, it's a Japanese word that means the practice of accumulating far more books than you'll ever have a chance to read.

ALEX TREBEK: I know the feeling. My den, my office is exactly the same as yours, I'm sure.

HOST: As the game went on, Hill maintained a lead, but faltered at a key moment with a clue from the "Dog is my co-pilot" category.

ALEX TREBEK: This breed is ready to set sail. Yoshie?

YOSHIE HILL: What is a warmaraner?

ALEX TREBEK: Oh, sorry.

[BUZZER]

You did--

--and we're out of time, but you did the same thing that Cliff did a moment ago in mispronouncing borzoi. It's not a warm-araner, it's a weimaraner.

HOST: And for his final Final Jeopardy round, Trebek read out a clue from the category "Women & Science." The clue concerned Dr. Margaret Todd, and both Hill and Gilligan got it right. But there can only be one winner.

ALEX TREBEK: Look at that smile folks, he's not a good poker player, I fear. He wrote down the correct response and he wagered $11,601--

For a total of $21,401. You could have made it an even 25,000 in honor of the day, but congratulations. Winner

HOST: Jim Gilligan had been trying for 30 years to get on the show, and in an interview published before the episode aired, he commented on Trebek saying, even though his health was not great and we all knew that, he didn't use it as an excuse. He was there 100%. We got Alex. As expected, Trebek was celebrated on social media for his final show. Past champion James Holzhauer tweeted, "I'm still not ready to say goodbye to Alex Trebek, but I will try."

Fellow "Jeopardy" champ Ken Jennings also tweeted about Trebek, writing, "It was gratifying during the last years of his life to see him universally recognized as the national treasure --or bi-national treasure-- that he was." Jennings will serve as an interim guest host starting Monday. On Friday, the official "Jeopardy" YouTube channel also posted a tribute compilation dedicated to Trebek.

ALEX TREBEK: It's a yellow hammer, not a yellow hamper.

Please remember, ladies and gentlemen, I do not write the clues.
