Before Ariana Grande was perfectly cast as Glinda in the new Wicked movie, she was busy manifesting playing the Good Witch one day. After falling in love with the Wicked Broadway show as a child, the then-7-year-old “7 Rings” singer performed “Popular” while meeting Glinda, a.k.a. Kristin Chenoweth, backstage. So, naturally, the pop star had the sweetest reaction when she got to hold the original Glinda wand from the 1939 film Wizard of Oz during a recent interview.

While Grande made an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show to talk about her latest role on December 3, the host revealed that she had an “extremely exciting and special” surprise for her guest. "It's actually, it was owned by the Smithsonian and now it's owned in private hands. But for the purposes of our sit-down, they loaned it to us,” Barrymore teased, before instructing her team, “Bring out the original Glinda wand, please.”

A shocked Grande put her hand over her mouth and began tearing up as she was handed the iconic set piece, which was used by the original Glinda played by Billie Burke. "Are you serious right now?" she asked, getting visibly emotional. The multi-hyphenate then pretended to make an exit with the wand, quipping, “Thank you, guys. It's been fun. Yeah, I'm kidding. I’m kidding."

As a stunned Grande wondered aloud how Barrymore had managed to pull off the loan, asking, “Did you break in?," the 50 First Dates star credited her crew for making it all happen. “I have to give credit to everyone on the show because literally we were so excited about you coming here,” she replied. “That is the original wand from The Wizard of Oz. So there you go.”

Playing Glinda has been in the books for Grande for decades, as Chenoweth opened up about the moment when the unknown star belted out her iconic song to her backstage.

"Her mom and grandma brought her back and she sang a little bit of 'Popular,'" Chenoweth said in a 2019 interview while lauding Grande’s singing abilities. "And I thought, 'Well you're pretty good.'"

Since then, Grande has had so many Oz-inspired moments, from dressing up as Dorothy in a 2013 episode of Victorious to a 2011 tweet calling Glinda her dream role. In a 2018 interview on the Zach Sang Show, Grande said she’d "do anything" to be in Wicked, revealing, "Whenever I'm nervous about anything, I listen front to back to Wicked.”
