If you are looking for a new film to add to your to-watch list, look no further than Suncoast. The film, starring Nico Parker, has just had its long-anticipated world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, and it won't be long until the rest of us to see the film that's already earning critical praise. But in the meantime, Teen Vogue has an exclusive clip from the movie to get you into the story.

Before we get into the clip, let's rewind a little. What exactly is SuncoastSuncoast is the debut feature film of Laura Chinn, who has written and directed the project. Set in early 2000s Florida, the semi-autobiographical film follows the story of Doris (played by Nico Parker), a teenager who strikes up an unlikely friendship with an eccentric activist (Woody Harrelson) after taking her terminally ill brother (Cree Kawa) to a specialized facility called Suncoast alongside her determined mother (Laura Linney).

In Teen Vogue's exclusive clip, we get to see Doris interacting with her fellow schoolmates at Clearwater Christian High School — played by Daniella Taylor and Ella Anderson, among others — who convince her to throw yet another party at her house while her mom is not home, this time with a little bit more than just good company. "Do you smoke weed?" Taylor's character Laci asks Doris. "Oh. Not.. right now, but I'm thinking about starting soon," she slowly replies.

"I love this scene because it shows the first time that Doris realizes that anyone might want to be her friend, let alone these three fabulous, charismatic girls, who she's admired for years," Parker tells Teen Vogue over email. “In another movie, the friendship they're offering her might have turned out to be shallow and conditional, but Laura Chinn is such a wonderful person and writer that this is just an unequivocally happy moment for Doris. And she so deserves one.”

Following its premiere at Sundance — where Parker also won the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Performance for her role — on January 21, Suncoast will be releasing in select theatres across the United States on February 2. It will also begin streaming exclusively on Hulu from February 9, 2024. You can watch the full trailer for Suncoast below:
