What to Watch Saturday: Lifetime movie inspired by true events of social media danger
Here’s what to watch tonight.
He’s Not Worth Dying For (8 p.m., Lifetime)
Another movie in Lifetime’s “Ripped from the Headlines” series, this one following the intertwined real and social media lives of Isla (Rachel Boyd), a 19-year-old girl who has established herself as a beauty and fashion influencer, and Grace (Hilda Martin), the expected valedictorian of her class with hopes of becoming a veterinarian. Both women have one thing in common: they are both dating Jake (Lachlan Quarmby), but neither of them know about the other woman. When they discover the truth about Jake’s cheating, the girls turn on each other in a jealous rivalry and use their arsenal of social media platforms to badmouth and attack one another. While their followers take sides and pit them against each other, their hatred for one another escalates into a real life fight that ultimately turns deadly.
Robin Givens stars as Grace’s mother, Cher, and Lochlyn Munro stars as the District Attorney investigating the case.
Note: While Lifetime says the movie is “inspired by true events,” it’s not clear what specific case it is based on. It seems like it’s more of a cautionary tale about the potential dangers of social media. But we did find this very nice story about three women who found out they were dating the same man, then all dumped him and became besties who traveled the country in a renovated bus.
He’s Not Worth Dying For is produced by Doomed Productions Inc for Lifetime with Tim Johnson, Orly Adelson, Stacy Mandelberg and Jon Eskenas serving as executive producers. Kevin Fair directs from a script written by Jacqueline Zambrano.
Two Tickets to Paradise (8 p.m., Hallmark)
In this new Hallmark movie, two weddings are ruined by both the bride and groom getting left at the altar, but they still decide to take their honeymoons, not knowing they are heading to the same resort in Hawaii. It stars fan favorites Ashley Williams, Ryan Paevey and Mary-Margaret Humes.
48 Hours: The Life and Death of Nikki Kuhnhausen (10 p.m., CBS)
This week’s episode is a repeat, but it just won the NLGJA: Association of LGBTQ Journalists 2022 Excellence in Journalism Award., so it’s worth revisiting. The episode tells the story of transgender teen Nikki Kuhnhausen, who disappeared after connecting with a man in a Snapchat rendezvous. Her murder inspired a new law and started a nationwide movement. Jamie Yuccas reports on the groundbreaking case and the impact it continues to have on LGBTQI+ communities.
Kuhnhausen’s murder illustrates the real-life dangers and struggles many in the transgender community face every day, said Nikki’s mother, Lisa Woods. Prosecutors, experts and Kuhnhausen’s friends talk about the challenges faced by transgender people and how her death will not be forgotten.
