Watford are in pole position to sign free agent Jeremy Ngakia.

The 19-year-old left West Ham last month after rejecting a new deal at London Stadium in favour of regular first-team football elsewhere.

The right-back is now set to head to Vicarage Road to join Watford, who will play in the Championship next season after their relegation from the Premier League.

Standard Sport understands that a deal is close to completion and if it goes through, Watford are required to pay a compensation fee to West Ham as part of FA rules on free transfers for players under the age of 24.

The deal has reportedly raised eyebrows at West Ham.

“We are really surprised and disappointed that Jeremy is not going to stay at West Ham,” admitted Moyes in June.

“I feel he is making a mistake choosing not to stay with us. We’ve trusted him in big games and everyone likes him at the club.

“I also feel it’s a kick in the teeth for the academy, because they have developed a player for the first team and he’s not going to stay."
