Watson Lake woman charged after women's shelter worker stabbed

A Watson Lake woman has been charged with attempted murder following a stabbing at a local women's shelter.

According to RCMP, the incident occurred Sunday at the Help and Hope for Families Women's Shelter in Watson Lake.

The victim, a 21-year-old employee of the shelter, was stabbed in the head, neck and face with a kitchen knife during the incident. She was treated at the Watson Lake Hospital and has since been released.

Ashley Minnie Chief, 27, from Watson Lake, was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, and assault with a weapon in connection with the incident.

According to RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Cam Lockwood, Chief was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs during the alleged incident and the victim and assailant were not known to one another. Chief appeared in court over the phone on Sunday and was remanded in custody.

The RCMP news release states that Watson Lake police and victim's services are working to "ensure that the victim is getting the support she needs as this matter continues to be investigated."
