Weather Service issues high-wind warning for Whatcom County, with storm alert for mountains

Scattered power outages were reported across Whatcom County on Monday morning as a powerful storm swept across Western Washington, bringing wind and rain to the lowlands and snow in the mountains.

Most outages were small and localized in western Whatcom County north of Bellingham as winds blew at a steady 30 mph with gusts to 55 mph at 9:30 a.m.

Fewer than 4,000 Puget Sound Energy customers were affected.

Weather forecasters are warning of power outages and property damage from a strong storm that is sweeping Whatcom County.

A high-wind warning is in effect for the lowlands around Bellingham, a gale watch is in effect for the Strait of Juan de Fuca and a winter storm warning is in effect for the mountains.

“Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected,” the National Weather Service said online.

Sustained south winds of 25-35 mph are expected, with gusts of 50-60 mph.

“Travel will be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles,” the weather service said.

“People should avoid being outside in forested areas and around trees and branches. If possible, remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm and avoid windows. Use caution if you must drive.”
