This week in photos: March 15

A youth spins a flaming tire as part of a tradition marking the upcoming Clean Monday, the first day of Great Lent in the Eastern Orthodox Christian church calendar, on March 10, 2019 in the Romanian village of Poplaca. This annual “Clean Monday” ritual, is designed to ward off evil spirits before the onset of Lent on Monday, which marks the beginning of 40 days of abstention, when Orthodox Christians cut out meat, fish, eggs, and dairy. Week in photos: The images you must see from the week of March 15

This week, cities in Canada got into the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, which falls on March 17, with a series of festive and colourful parades.

Flora and fauna that lay dormant in during winter in the Northern Hemisphere put on a show this week, too. A ‘super bloom’ of wild poppies burst onto the scene in the hills of southern California following heavier-than-usual winter rains.

Combined with a royal-and-star-studded event and a larger-than-life art installation in Hong Kong, it’s been quite a week for photos.
