This week in photos: March 8

Visitors take a photo of a lake that has turned a vivid pink thanks to extreme salt levels further exacerbated by hot weather in a startling natural phenomena that resembles a toxic spill, in Melbourne on March 4, 2019. The natural spectacle is the result of green algae at the bottom of the lake at Westgate Park on the outskirts of Melbourne responding to high levels of salt and changing colour. Week in photos: The images you must see from the week of March 8

This week, Christians around the world marked the start of the Lent season — which means Shrove Tuesday (or Pancake Tuesday) for some, and Mardi Gras for others.

The world also experienced some wild weather, including a lake turning pink due to heat in Australia and a tornado tearing through the southern U.S.

Combined with a royal visit to Blackpool, England and a stunning SpaceX launch and landing, we’ve had quite a week.
