SINGAPORE — Here is a round-up of sports events and developments in Singapore in the past week (23 to 29 August):

Charmaine Soh named World Netball athlete ambassador of Asia

Singapore's national netball captain Charmaine Soh has been selected by World Netball as its athlete ambassador of Asia, the international governing body said in a media release on Tuesday (24 August).

The 31-year-old joins two Jamaican netballers, Marva Bernard and Shamera Sterling, as World Netball's athlete ambassadors.

World Netball, which was renamed from International Netball Federation in June as part of a rebranding exercise, has began unveiling its team of ambassadors as it aims to grow global participation in the sport.

Soh is Singapore's most-capped netballer, and launched a netball academy - Stellar Netball Academy - in 2020 to create a pathway for younger players.

"I am extremely honoured to have been invited to become the World Netball athlete ambassador for the Asia region. Netball has given me so many opportunities and I am looking forward to working with World Netball to grow the game across the region," she said.

“Netball not only trained me to be more disciplined and selfless, but it also moulded me into the person I am today. I’m always looking for ways to inspire and empower younger generations when it comes to sports, especially netball. Hence, why I’m really excited to be taking on this role.”

Abdul Hadi clinches back-to-back wins at S'pore Pro Series Invitational

Singapore golfer Abdul Hadi Uda Thith recorded the first back-to-back victory on the Singapore Pro Series Invitational Presented by FTAG on Thursday (26 August), when he claimed the seventh and penultimate leg of the season at Sentosa Golf Club.

The 26-year-old won by three shots on the Serapong Course in the 36-hole mixed tournament, having triumphed by five strokes on the same course two weeks ago. He carded his second successive three-under-par 68 for a six-under total, finishing ahead of second-placed Mardan Mamat, who also came in with a 68. Singapore’s Joshua Shou was third after shooting a 69 to finish on two over.

The victory saw Hadi move to the top of the Order of Merit for the first time, ahead of second-placed countryman Gregory Foo, while Mardan is third.

The Singaporean was part of the 2015 SEA Games silver medal-winning team and in early 2019 finished first at the Qualifying School for PGA Tour Series-China.

The season-ending leg of the Pro Series Invitational will be held on 5 and 6 January also at Sentosa Golf Club. Each leg counts towards the Race to FTAG Cup, where the winner of the Order of Merit will also receive a bonus of $10,000.

Albirex open up 5-point lead atop SPL

Albirex Niigata (Singapore) opened up a five-point lead at the top of the Singapore Premier League (SPL) after a 4-0 win over Balestier Khalsa at Jurong East Stadium on Saturday (28 August). Kuraba Kondo scored a hat-trick (47th, 51st and 65th minutes) before Ryoya Taniguchi added a fourth in the 77th minute.

Second-placed Lion City Sailors, who have a game in hand, stumbled in the title chase after a 1-1 draw with third-placed Hougang United at Jalan Besar Stadium on Friday. Sailors striker Stipe Plazibat's 75th-minute goal cancelled out Anders Aplin's 51st-minute opener.

There was drama at Our Tampines Hub on Saturday, when bottom-placed Young Lions came back from 1-2 down with seven minutes left to record a stunning 3-2 win. Ilhan Fandi's brace in the 84th and 94th minute gave the Young Lions their third win of the season.

On Sunday, Tampines Rovers drew 2-2 with Tanjong Pagar United at Our Tampines Hub.
