Good news, Killing Eve fans. The BAFTA-winning show is returning for its highly anticipated third season earlier than originally planned.

The announcement was shared on the show's official Twitter account today along with an explosive new trailer which gives us some clues as to what to expect from the third season. Given the incredibly intense season two finale and the fact that we're collectively burning through our Netflix and Disney+ queues faster than ever right now, we can't wait to see our favourite psychopath Villanelle return to our screens. Starting with the most recent update, here's everything you need to know about the next instalment.

Watch the trailer for Killing Eve season 3

As season 3 of Killing Eve draws ever closer, stars Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh have treated us to an epic trailer that provides some clues as to what fans can expect from the latest season.

Have a watch below, but just a warning, if you're scared of clowns, look away now...

The trailer shows Jodie Comer's Villanelle in her own words, "moving up in the world" following the death of Sandra Oh's Eve... that is until she learns from her primary handler for The Twelve that Eve is still very much alive. In true Killing Eve style, the trailer is dramatic, darkly comic and absurd all at once.

The trailer comes after two very cryptic teaser clips released earlier this year. The first of which sees enemies Villanelle and Eve both dressed in red, as dramatic music playing "Hallelujah" is heard in the background.

Villanelle is seen stroking what looks like a scalpel on the end of a musical tuning fork against her lips, before pointing it aggressively at the camera. If seasons 1 and 2 have taught us anything, it's that Villanelle is the master of unusual murder weapons, so we wouldn't be surprised if she's got a secret scalpel tucked up her sleeve at all times.

This is the second teaser trailer that's been released for Killing Eve season 3. The first came out on Valentine's Day and saw Villanelle reaching out from behind a sheet of red material with the same "Hallelujah" soundtrack, while the clip announced "Happy V Day". Will the sexual tension between Villanelle and Eve finally turn into a full-on romance? So. Many. Questions.

When will Killing Eve season 3 be released?

While the news season of Killing Eve was originally set to air on 26 April 2020, the launch date has been moved forward two weeks and, unlike in previous years, there won't be such a delay between airing in the US and in the UK.

Last year, UK fans had to wait two months to catch season 2 of the hit crime drama after it aired in the states, but this time the UK will only be a week behind. The third season's first episode will premiere on BBC America on Saturday 12 April 2020 and here in the UK on BBC One on Saturday 19 April 2020 at 9pm, with episodes following weekly after that.

Can't wait that long? You'll also be able to stream the new episodes on BBC iPlayer from 6am the morning after they're released in the US, so from Sunday 13 April 2020.

What happens in Killing Eve season 3?

The first teaser pictures for season 3 were released in February 2020, and show a whole new look for Villanelle in a floral dress. We also see Eve getting to grips with a new job (is she a chef or a butcher?), and are introduced to new character Felix (played by Stefan Iancu) dressed up like a clown with Villanelle. Producers have refused to expand on the mysterious new character, but we can assume he's going to be Villanelle's new sidekick:

Villanelle gets married!

Plot twist! A big moment of the third season apparently centres around Villanelle's wedding, with a source telling The Sun she marries a Spanish woman in new scenes. "The wedding is one of the key scenes in the series," the insider commented. "Last time out, things ended with the tension between Villanelle and Eve at an all-time high, so fans will be hoping that they get together."

The episode was shot last month at stately home Tyringham Hall in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshere, with a source adding, "But unfortunately, it seems that Villanelle and her Spanish bride are very loved-up.

"The scenes that Jodie and co have already shot include a big Spanish band and the cutting of a cake, before she spots an enemy among the guests and goes after them."

Eve Survives

At the end of season two (yep, *spoilers* alert!), Eve Polastri (played by Sandra Oh) looked fatally wounded after being shot by Villanelle (Jodie Comer), after the pair are on the run together in Rome. But Eve was actually wearing her bullet proof vest, and Sandra Oh has confirmed she survives.

In an interview with PORTER which dropped on 18 October 2019, Sandra commented: "So, obviously I didn’t die." She went on to discuss how challenging she found the role. "A lot of the time I feel Eve is fighting. And there have been times when I have been fighting as well"This has something to do with the psychological depths Eve has gone to and she wonders if that’s why the show has struck such a nerve, particularly among women. Eve is changing, and the deeper you go, the deeper the resonance can be."

When was Killing Eve season 3 confirmed?

The news of Villanelle et al returning for a third time first dropped on 9 April 2019 on Killing Eve's official Twitter account. "Season 3, baby x", the Tweet said. This, of course, sent fans worldwide (including us) into a frenzy, hoping it would be true.

And it is! Shortly afterwards, Sarah Barnett, President of Entertainment Networks for AMC Networks, confirmed the news along with the name of the new female writer who's on board, having been passed the show runner baton.

Who will work on Killing Eve season 3? Will Phoebe Waller-Bridge return?

While Phoebe Waller-Bridge was the show runner for season one, and Emerald Fennell has done the job for the second season, Suzanne Heathcote is writer number three.

"We love having this show and the brilliant Sandra Oh, Jodie Comer and Fiona Shaw on our networks,” said Sarah, Metro reports. "Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Emerald Fennell have delivered two addictively entertaining seasons.

"As we did last year, we’re renewing Killing Eve right out of the gate, now with Suzanne Heathcote as lead writer, as a sign of confidence – we adore this show as much as our fans do. Killing Eve doesn’t do anything in a templated way; we love giving opportunity to three genius women to make their mark."

It looks like we're in safe hands with Suzanne Heathcote's brain, given that Phoebe Waller-Bridge has high praise for her: "I'm very excited that the Killing Eve baton is being passed onto another incredible writer for season three," she said. "We can sleep soundly knowing these characters are safe in Suzanne Heathcote’s hilariously murderous hands."

Who else will be starring in the third season?

As well Sandra Oh (Eve Polastri), Jodie Comer (Villanelle) and Fiona Shaw (Carolyn Martens), Killing Eve season three will also see host of new characters join the show, including familiar faces from Harry Potter and Game of Thrones.

Gemma Whelan, who played Yara Greyjoy in Game of Thrones is said to be joining the cast and also Predrag Bjelac, who played Igor Karkaroff in Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Other names added to this season's cast list include Succession's Dame Harriet Walter, The Crown's Danny Sapani and Inside No.9's Steve Pemberton, Doctor Who’s Raj Bajaj and Ready Player One’s Turlough Convery. Exciting!

Will Villanelle and Eve become the Bonnie & Clyde duo we all desire?

Despite the shock twist which saw Villanelle shoot Eve in the season two finale, many fans are still hoping for a reunion between the pair, and for the duo to continue being on the run.

Season two showrunner Emerald Fennell teased the team up in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, commenting: "As a writer and as someone who's obsessed with the show in general and with Jodie and Sandra and their electric chemistry, of course we all want them to do a Bonnie and Clyde and a sort of Natural Born Killers and go on a rampage wearing couture.

"What ruins it for Eve, for both of them, really, is it becoming real," she added, before explaining why - despite their very strong chemistry - it ultimately wouldn't work between the pair. "One of them is a psychopath and one isn't. Psychologically, you can't shy away from the fact that they are different creatures fundamentally, on a chemical level. It remains to be seen to what extent Villanelle has been changed by Eve."
