West Edmonton fire damages 2 properties

Edmonton Fire Rescue officials are investigating the cause of a Monday night fire, which damaged a pair of residential properties in west Edmonton and triggered a small explosion.

The fire started inside at 14515 88th Ave. in the Parkview neighbourhood, said Maya Filipovic, spokesperson for Edmonton Fire Rescue on Tuesday morning.

A garage on the property was in flames when crews arrived around 11 p.m., Filipovic said.

The fire spread to a detached garage next door. Water used to extinguish the fire also caused minor flooding to the basement of the second home.

Initially, fire officials incorrectly stated that a total of three residential properties were damaged in the fire.

Crews were able to get the fire under control just before 11:30 p.m. It was fully extinguished by 1:45 a.m.

Investigators have determined that the fire originated on a wooden deck at the back of the home, Filipovic said.

Damages to the home and contents where the fire originated is estimated at approximately $175,000. Damage to the structure and contents of the neighbouring garage are estimated at $35,000.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

No one was in the home by the time firefighters arrived on scene and no one was injured, Filipovic said. Occupants of the two affected homes were able to find temporary accommodations.

Some witnesses in the neighbourhood reported hearing a large explosion. Investigators determined that the blast was triggered by a small propane cylinder which caught fire.
