West LRT-related property value drops eligible for compensation

People concerned their property values have dropped because of the West LRT line might be eligible for compensation.

The city has issued a public notice saying anyone with property right next to the tracks is eligible to make a claim.

The city was legally required to do this within one year of the official completion of the project.

Michael Thompson, the city's director of transportation infrastructure, says property owners are eligible if they have had a permanent reduction in the appraised value of their land because of the existence of the LRT line — but not it's construction or use.

"They have 60 days to let us know about that, to send a claim in writing. And then that would start the process," he said.

In addition to the public notices, letters have been sent to 700 property owners along the new C-Train line.

Kelly Pitaoulis, whose house in Christie Park backs on to the new route, says she'd have to think about whether it has affected her property value.

"There are a few things, the noise, it is a little bit more than I think people thought it would be," she said.
