Western P.E.I. man fails to show for sentencing on weapons-related charges

Jury selection begins for dangerous driving causing death trial

A warrant has been issued for Dylan Chaisson, 24, after the St. Roch, P.E.I., man failed to show up in court to be sentenced to weapons-related charges in connection with an altercation with two men trying to rob him in his home last year.

Chaisson was scheduled to be sentenced Thursday in Summerside, but failed to show up.

He has pleaded guilty to charges of uttering threats, careless use of a firearm, failing to have a license for a prohibited weapon, possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm, and failing to attend court last November.

Altercation last September

The charges are connected to an altercation after two 19-year-old men, Riley Callin, and Dylan MacIsaac, came into Chaisson's house last September. They got into an argument, and there was a struggle over a firearm.

Court heard no shots were fired and no one was seriously hurt.

Both men pleaded guilty to robbery. Callin was sentenced to 43 months in a federal prison and MacIssac was sentenced to two years less a day in the provincial jail.

Failed to show up

Chaisson's lawyer and the Crown had worked out a joint recommendation on sentencing.

"From time to time, people that are in agreement on one day, change their mind, and that happens and that may be the circumstance," said Crown prosecutor John Diamond.

"Or, Mr. Chaisson might now have gotten the date right and just failed to recognize the importance of coming today."

Chaisson's lawyer made several attempts Thursday morning to contact him about his court appearance but told the court he was unsuccessful.
