Western P.E.I. tire dump site a threat to ducks, says local MLA

The Prince Edward Island government says it's keeping an eye on a tire dump near a wetland in western P.E.I. after a Conservative MLA showed photos of the location in the legislature.

The photos show thousands of tires in a shale pit near a Huntley wetland used by ducks.

"The thousands of tires are still there from the summer," said Brad Trivers, a Conservative who represents Rustico-Emerald.

"What actions have you taken, Minister of Transportation?"

Transportation Minister Paula Biggar responded by highlighting what the government has done about the tire dump.

"We are continuously shipping those off Prince Edward Island to our supplier in Quebec, who can only take so many of those tires," Biggar said. "We will continue towards eradicating that number of tires that are there."

Environment Minister Robert Mitchell said his department is aware of the situation in Huntley and will keep an eye on it with the transportation department.
