Westphal deck collapse injures 4 after glass panels shatter

Paramedics treating patients at home eases end-of-life journey, caregiver says

Several people were taken to hospital after more than a dozen people fell one storey when a deck collapsed at a home outside of Cole Harbour Sunday evening.

A fire official says about 15 people fell, and at least four suffered injuries, some of which were serious but not life-threatening. They had been at a gathering at the home on Westmount Drive in Westphal.

"The injuries that were sustained were mostly lacerations, bumps and bruises type things from broken glass," said Corey Beals, a division commander with Halifax Fire and Emergency.

"The deck did have glass panels in it – that's where most of the lacerations came from."

Investigation begins

The fire department was called to the scene shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday, along with RCMP and EHS.

Beals said the single-platform deck was one storey off the ground, and spanned almost the width of the house. He estimated it was about 12 feet deep.

Beals said that the homeowner had been present at the time but he did not believe that person was injured.

He said they've turned the scene over to the RCMP, and a municipal building inspector is expected to assess the home Monday.
