Westport council is considering an off-leash dog park behind the water tower at 15 Bedford Road.

The recommendation for the dog park follows council’s decision in October to close the seasonal dog park at Lockwood Park.

A report to council said there is little municipal land in the village suitable for a dog park but the water-tower area might be a possibility because it is large enough.

Peter Evans, public works manager, said that the lot is about 60 by 400 feet with the water tower in the middle.

The price for the fencing and land preparation would be an item for next year’s budget meeting, said Mayor Robin Jones.

“We know that there are many of us in the village who have dogs, some of which who would enjoy an off-leash dog park,” said Jones. “We’re trying to find a solution in a municipality that has very, very little open land,” said Jones.

Staff was directed to report back with cost estimates and a policy to council.
