The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office recently announced it has secured funding for a local gun buy-back program.

Details on how the program will work will be announced in the spring, according to a news release from the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office.

“As the Sheriff of Whatcom County, I want to emphasize that combating gun violence is extremely important to me, not only as a law enforcement officer but also on a deeply personal level,” Sheriff Donnell Tanskley said in the release. “Having tragically lost several family members to gun violence, I understand the devastating impact it has on families, communities, and our entire society.”

The $125,000 in funding comes from the Washington State Attorney General’s Office, and the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office is one of 12 law enforcement agencies across the state to receive such funding.
