How, When and Where to Catch the First Full Moon of 2022
The "Wolf Moon," which marks the first full moon of 2022, is expected to rise on Monday, January 17.
Arriving in the constellation of Cancer, the "Wolf Moon" gets its name due to the howling of wolves that are heard during this time of year. January's full moon is also referred to as the "Ice Moon," "Old Moon," "Snow Moon" and so on.
At precisely 23:48 UTC, or 18:48 EST and 15:48 PST, the moon will be 100% lit by the sun, although the full moon itself will be visible for around three days beginning Sunday, January 16. The best time to view the full moon is when it is close to the horizon as it rises or sets. This is when the moon is less bright and also looks orange, due to Rayleigh scattering.
