Where the streets have 1 name: 6 new streets created from Bethel Avenue

It's been years of headaches and confusion for the dozens of people who lived on Bethel Avenue(s).

That's because the Dartmouth street — which is private land — was sprawled over seven different roads, each making their own twists and turns on the gravel road. Some sections of the road were even cut off by barriers, and need to be accessed from different streets.

To add to the mix-up, civic numbers had been issued at random over the years. For example, house 10 is several houses and a lane away from house 11.

Decades of issues

The arbitrary system has caused countless problems for the residents of the block. They say taxis and delivery drivers would constantly knock on their door, asking for directions.

But the bigger problem was with emergency services. The confusion became a public safety concern, according to the city.

Starting over

But that's all coming to an end.

Monday morning, Halifax Regional Municipality finally issued new street names and civic numbers to each of the lanes and homes.

While Bethel Avenue remains the main street, it now branches into Cecil, Edna, Florries, Holmes, Pollys and Paget lanes.

The residents say though it's a hassle to change over their mailing address for bills and identification, they're glad it's finally over and believe in the long run it will be worth it.
