Whistling steel sound sculpture unveiled in Centretown

A nearly five-metre-tall sound sculpture in the shape of a tree, made up of dozens of steel cylinders, is being unveiled in Centretown on Saturday.

The Listening Tree was created by Mixed Metaphors, a duo comprised of Carleton University professor Jesse Stewart and architecture graduate Matt Edwards.

The piece, which was commissioned in 2015, will sit in St. Luke's Park at the corner of Elgin Street and Gladstone Avenue.

"The piece is a response, in many ways, to its surroundings. ... The wind kind of travels often down Gladstone, and so we were very conscious of that and responding to that as well, the way in which the city is actually channeling the wind.

"We also wanted it to have a significant presence visually, so people would see it from a distance, but we also then wanted to have this much more subtle kind of sonic experience for people."

The official unveiling takes place Saturday at 1 p.m.
