This is what the white plastic table in pizza boxes is ACTUALLY for

Whenever you order a takeaway pizza, you will usually open the box to a little while plastic table sitting in the middle.

Debate has raged over the years as to what its actual purpose is - from keeping the slices separated to being a mini table to balance your slices on.

However, the real reason for its inclusion in the boxes has finally been revealed - and it’s actually genius.

Gooey: No pizza saver can result in an unholy mess (Twitter@jhaugh)

In fact, the ‘pizza saver’ is designed to separate the lid of the cardboard box from sagging onto the hot pizza toppings and ruining the cheesy treat.

The brains behind the idea is mum-turned-inventor Carmela Vitale, from Dix Hills, New York, who came up with the idea in 1983, according to Eater.

Invention: The pizza saver was awarded a patent in 1985 (Wikipedia)

She wrote for her patent filing: “[Delivery products] require a relatively inexpensive and disposable box or carton.

“Due to the quality of the board and their large size, there is a tendency of the covers to sag or to be easily depressed at their centre portions so that they may damage or mark the pies or cakes during storage or delivery.”

The patent was granted in 1985 and the rest is history with the pizza saver used around the world in delivery boxes ever since.
