Whitehorse hotel's restaurant workers apply to form union

A union representing restaurant workers at Whitehorse’s Coast High Country Inn has applied to the Canadian Industrial Relations Board for certification.

A union representing restaurant workers at Whitehorse’s Coast High Country Inn has applied to the Canadian Industrial Relations Board for certification.

Mathew Magoffin, the union’s business manager in Whitehorse, says it's a first for the Yukon.

"I know from experience that working in that industry is mentally and physically exhausting and workers in the Yukon deserve fairness,” he said.

“We want to offer better job security for everyone. That includes better access to apprenticeship training and better opportunities for kitchen and bar staff."

Magoffin said about 20 to 25 workers at The Deck and Morel's are involved in the move.

The Coast High Country Inn is owned by the Northern Vision Development group. It also owns the Best Western Gold Rush Hotel and the Edgewater.

Magoffin said staff at those hotels are not included in this application.

He said he expects to hear next week about a voting date.
