With Christmas well and truly out of the way, most kids will have turned their attention to the birthday countdown – and, that includes the royal children too. But, birthday presents and party invites aside, it seems the Cambridge kids have something a little extra to celebrate this year, as all three will get to skip school on their birthday.

Yep, while the rest of us clock in for our 9-5 on our birthdays, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis will get to enjoy a day off school. Surprisingly though, this has nothing to do with their royal lineage, and is in fact all down to chance.

In 2022, Prince George will turn nine-years-old, Princess Charlotte will turn seven-years-old and Prince Louis will turn four-years-old, and luckily, all three of their birthdays fall on days they aren't required to attend school. You could say they've won the birthday lottery. Here's how it works out...

For Prince George, Kate Middleton and Prince William's eldest child, having the day off on his birthday comes as no surprise, being that his birthday almost always falls outside of term time on 22 July. As for his siblings, Princess Charlotte's birthday is 2 May, which this year is marked by the early May Bank Holiday, meaning her school (and schools across the country) will be closed for the day. Similarly, Prince Louis will also get the day off for his birthday on 23 April, which falls on a Saturday this year.

And, the good birthday luck seems to have spread, as mum Kate also got to spend her birthday at home with her family this year. As we know, earlier this month the Duchess of Cambridge turned 40-years-old, and with her birthday (9 January) falling on a Sunday, she too enjoyed a day off from her typical royal engagements. Prince William however, won't be celebrating his 40th with a day off, as his birthday (21 June) lands on a Tuesday.

That being said, there's still plenty for William (and the whole Royal Family) to look forward to in 2022, with the Queen's Platinum Jubilee fast approaching. Next month, Her Majesty will mark 70-years on the throne, and the huge milestone will be celebrated with a grand party at Windsor Castle as well as an additional bank holiday in June (yay to that).

The Platinum Jubilee is thought to be a "once-in-a-generation show", with the culture secretary calling it a "truly historic moment" and a "celebration to remember".
