Here’s Why Jane Fonda “Vowed” to Never Buy Another Piece of Clothing

  • Jane Fonda, 82, revealed that she hasn’t bought a new item of clothing since last fall.

  • The Grace and Frankie star said she vowed to never buy clothes again.

  • Fonda has been focusing on bringing awareness to climate concerns.

At 82, Jane Fonda has spent decades in the limelight, from the start of her career starring in hit films like Klute and 9 to 5 to her role in Netflix’s Grace and Frankie alongside one of her best friends, Lily Tomlin. Of course, Fonda is no stranger to red carpets, dazzling gowns, and lots of glam.

But she recently opened up to InStyle about her time in quarantine, and it turns out the actress is not missing getting all dolled up. In fact, the climate advocate revealed she made a promise to herself a long time ago to make more sustainable choices around fashion.

“I don’t care if I ever do that again. I don’t enjoy it; I never have,” Fonda told the outlet of the glitz and the glam of dressing up for Hollywood events. “Last fall, I vowed that I would never buy another article of clothing, and I haven’t.”

A great example of this is when she recycled her 2020 Oscars gown, which she originally wore at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. She also rocked sustainable jewelry, and showed off a brand new head of gorgeous gray hair.

The decision to give up shopping for clothes comes as no surprise for the longtime environmental activist. (Fun fact: Research shows that the fashion industry produces more than 92 million tons of waste per year, along with consuming 79 trillion liters of water.)

Fonda, who partnered with Greenpeace in 2019, has been working with the organization to bring awareness to climate concerns. She launched her “Fire Drill Fridays” in December 2019 on the steps of the White House, which landed her multiple arrests.

In fact, the iconic red coat that she wore to protests was the last item of clothing she bought. “You see this coat? I needed something red and I went out and found this coat on sale. This is the last article of clothing that I will ever buy,” she said while speaking to a crowd about consumerism.

Even through the coronavirus pandemic, Fonda has continued to fight for climate change by holding her Fire Drill Fridays virtually. She told InStyle she’s been doing a lot of work over Zoom and holding rallies online.

“We may be staying home, and yes, we must stay home, but we will never stop speaking out about the climate crisis and demanding our leadership take action,” Fonda said in a statement back in March, per The Hollywood Reporter. “And while you are quarantined at home, we hope you will join us virtually because our movement is not slowing down.”

That’s evident in the release of her new book, What Can I Do?: My Path From Climate Despair to Action. “This is an all hands on deck moment,” she told Al Roker on Today. “No matter who’s elected in November, we have to role up are sleeves and demand from them that they do right by the future.”
