'Why should people vote for you?': Party leaders share last-minute pitches

It's the final stretch of the Newfoundland and Labrador election campaign, and candidates are making their final arguments to voters.

The St. John's Morning Show finished off its pre-election coverage by asking each party leader: "Why should people in this province vote for you?"

Each party leader was given one minute to sum up their final pitches to voters. Here are transcripts of what the leaders had to say, presented in alphabetical order.

Dwight Ball

"While they are certainly voting for me, that's what I would be asking the voters in Newfoundland and Labrador and not only just voting for me, but voting for a strong team of candidates that we have in place. We started our campaign with a five-point plan to get our province back on track, and it's the same. It's the direction that we want to take this province in. We have the experience, we have the depth, and the breadth of knowledge amongst our 40 candidates, it can get this province back on track.

"It's about creating a strong economy, it's about jobs, it's about health care. It's the reason why we decided that early on that we needed to reverse this HST and get this two points back in the pockets of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. It's about growing our economy, creating jobs, so that we can have that stronger tomorrow for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians."

Paul Davis

"Our platform has been on leadership, it's a leader you can trust. My policies have been clear. The work that I've done has been solid. In the last year, I took over as premier just a year ago, and every day we've rolled out plans, we've rolled out our policies and how we govern.

"Even though a year ago the Liberals said the wheels were going to come off our bus, and the provincial bus, it hasn't. Our economy is strong, people are still employed, business confidence is strong, we still make high salaries, and people are doing very, very well in Newfoundland and Labrador, despite the challenges. That's the government that we're going to provide: continued steady hand at the wheel, proven leadership, a vision for the future, being honest and open with the people of Newfoundland and Labrador."

Earle McCurdy

"Fundamentally voters should vote for us because the NDP is on your side. We have laid out a platform of practical realistic, affordable measures that would help the life of ordinary Newfoundland and Labradorians.Families, seniors, low income earners, people living on fixed incomes, people in the workforce, young families would benefit from the platform laid out by our party.

"People should also think long and hard about the type of House of Assembly we have. The parliamentary democracy system that we operate under is dependent not only on having a strong government but having a strong, forceful opposition that will hold governments feet to the fire, that will keep them to account and will make sure that the voice of the people is heard on the floor of the House of Assembly. That's what our small but mighty caucus has done for the last four years and that's what we'll continue to do. The more NDP MHAs that are elected, the louder our voice will be. Every NDP win is a win for the people of Newfoundland & Labrador."
