This Is Why Reheated Takeaway Curry Can Be Extremely Bad For You

One of the joys about getting a takeaway curry on a Saturday night is knowing you’ll have some left over for the next day.

But sometimes that microwaved curry goodness ends up in us having to make a mad dash to the toilet every half an hour.

In fact, a million Brits come down with food poisoning every year, often after a second day of takeaways.

It turns out that there is a very good reason for this - and it all boils down to just how hot you have your leftovers.

According to boffin Michael Mosley, you have to heat your entire dish to 82 degrees to kill off all the bacteria.

This is because bacteria pockets collect inside the dish and while on the surface the food might be piping hot, inside is a different story.

He explained in a video for Brit Lab that the art is to stir your takeout thoroughly, making sure the whole thing is hot enough.

Bizarrely, rice is something of particular concern as it can carry the bacillus cereus bug - which causes things like vomiting and diarrhoea.

Therefore you should always cool rice very quickly, sticking it in your fridge within one hour of eating your food.

That is, of course, if you haven’t scoffed it all already.
