Wildfire near Upper Musquodoboit 70% contained, Yarmouth County fire under control
A wildfire near Upper Musquodoboit, N.S., has grown from 20 to 52 hectares since Friday, but is not expected to spread beyond established boundaries given current conditions, according to David Steeves, a spokesperson for the Natural Resources Department.
Because the terrain in the area is quite rough it has made it more difficult for firefighters to make their way around the perimeter, he said Saturday.
Steeves said there are around 15 department staff at the site in Chaplin, N.S., with three Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency tankers and another from Stewiacke.
Meanwhile, a 3,200-hectare fire near Horseshoe Lake in Yarmouth County is fully contained, Steeves said.
"That doesn't necessarily mean that they've got a hose line all the way around it," he said. "But the fire has moved into areas of unfavourable fuels or it's come up against a road or areas of high rock — something that's impeding the movement of that fire."
Steeves said crews are combing the area looking for trouble spots at that fire.
The department said in a tweet that two helicopters, 40 personnel and an incident management team are staying at the scene but a water bomber has been released.
It is important that people adhere to the provincewide burn ban, Steeves said.
