Two info sessions on wildfire resiliency planning by the Regional District of Nanaimo are scheduled for Gabriola in November.
On Nov. 4, the RDN will run a virtual session on wildfire resiliency and fuel management prescriptions for the 707 Community Park.
On Nov. 10, a community wildfire resilience planning meeting is scheduled for Electoral Area B. Both sessions start at 7 p.m.; interested residents can register at www.getinvolved.rdn.ca/rdn-wildfire-resiliency.
Back in August, the RDN held an hour-long session about the wildfire resiliency plans the RDN is developing for each electoral area. Matt Shields and Conor Corbett of Diamond Head Consulting, who are writing the resiliency plans, explained the plans will include maps on wildfire risks for each community with a focus on the wild land urban interface, that is, where developed lands and wild or forested lands meet.
Risk mapping won’t be prepared for private lands, but will still look at ways to reduce wildfire risk through FireSmart practices, the consultants explained.
A recording of that session is available on the RDN’s Get Involved website.
