Will and Kate break tradition in rare display of public affection

Prince William and Kate Middleton often appear very stoic while in public together, but the couple recently broke from tradition in a rare display of affection.

While being awarded the gold Blue Peter badges for their campaign work on mental health issues affecting children, Kate looked over at William at one point and patted his knee. The pat was quick — but it was sweet and affectionate.

Although it’s not an official royal rule, the Duke and Duchess are never touchy-feely at events where they represent the monarchy.

The reserved decorum is a huge contrast from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle — the couple has been together for a year and half, and their PDA has become major fodder for the media.

Some royal watchers are wondering if Will and Kate have inadvertently taken notes from the newly engaged couple.

“It is actually simply is a matter of preference for each couple,” royal etiquette expert Myka Meier told the Huffington Post. “Every royal is clearly trusted to make their own judgment calls to what they think is appropriate.”

Will and Kate’s stiff British decorum may also come down to the line of succession — William may act more reserved since he’s second in line to the British throne, while Prince Harry is sixth.

“One day, {William] will be the King of England, and the Duke of Cambridge is clearly very sensitive to the honour he has been given,” said Meier.

“His actions are a sign that he takes his role as a high ranking royal very seriously, which is simply a sign of respect to both the royal family, his country and its citizens.”

Respectful or not, the pat on the knee was rather cute.
