Will Power uninjured when Ed Carpenter's car lands on top of his

Pole-sitter Will Power spun out in turns 1 and 2 of the first lap of Saturday night’s IndyCar race at Gateway Motorsports Park. And then Ed Carpenter’s car ended up on top of his.

Power was lucky to escape injury as Carpenter’s car catapulted on top of his after Power’s spin. As Power was against the wall, Carpenter’s car slid into Powers and launched on top of Power’s for a brief moment before coming to a rest back on the track.

It’s a wreck that’s not nearly as spectacular as Scott Dixon’s crash at Indianapolis, but yet another reason why IndyCar needs to develop solid head protection for its drivers as soon as possible. Power was feet — maybe even inches — from being hit in the head by Carpenter’s car. And IndyCar doesn’t need another driver suffering a serious head injury because of the open nature of its cockpits.
