Windsor 911 dispatcher brings end to violent crime spree

Windsor police become impromptu firefighters after responding to family dispute

A 911 dispatcher brought a violent crime spree to an end while driving home from work early Tuesday morning.

Police spent several hours looking for a man who had broken into three homes and assaulted one of the homeowners.

The first call came around 1 a.m. when the man broke into the home of someone he knew on Giles Boulevard West near Bruce Avenue, according to police.

After being confronted by the homeowner, the man ran off with several stolen items. Someone then saw a man fitting the suspect's description smashing a car window.

The crime spree continued around 2:45 a.m. when the man broke into another home on Church Street about half a block from Bruce Avenue. The man demanded an elderly woman hand over keys to her car.

When the man learned she didn't have a car, he broke into a neighbour's house by smashing a window. After a struggle with the homeowner, the suspect ran off once again, breaking into another car on the street.

By 8 a.m., a 911 dispatcher was driving home from work and saw a man that fit the suspect's description on Ouellette Avenue, near Ellis Street, and called police.

The man was finally arrested. He is charged with three counts of break and enter, two counts of mischief, robbery, assault with a weapon and two counts of possession of stolen property.
