Windsor arenas have alarm systems to warn of ammonia leaks

The man in charge of Windsor's arenas says the city has systems in place to prevent ammonia poisoning following the death of three workers at an arena in Fernie, British Columbia.

The RCMP confirmed the men died in what they call a "workplace incident."

Executive director or recreation and culture for Windsor, Ray Mensour, said the refrigeration systems for the city's arenas are contained in rooms that have alarm systems to detect ammonia leaks.

"Once the number's above 25 parts per million, they receive an alarm and they notify our refrigeration contractor who would come in and do the work, and staff are instructed not to enter the room," he explained. "So it really becomes dangerous once it reaches above 95 parts per million, and at that point, we evacuate the entire facility."

Mensour added he is not aware of that level ever having been reached in Windsor.
