Windsor-Essex resident has West Nile virus, says health unit

A Windsor-Essex County resident has tested positive for West Nile virus, said a media release from the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit Friday.

This is the first confirmed, clinically diagnosed human case for this region in 2015, said the health unit.

Most people with West Nile virus never develop symptoms and will not know that they have the virus. Approximately 25 per cent of the people with the virus will develop West Nile fever. And, less than one per cent develop severe neuro-invasive disease, the media release notes.

West Nile virus is a mosquito-transmitted virus that can be transferred to humans from the bite of an infected mosquito. Canada had its first confirmed case in 2002. The virus occurs in the summer months. Between 2007 and 2011, an average of six cases of the virus were reported per year in Ontario.
